Mr Daryl Williams Media Release

NEW GOVERNMENT ONLINE DIRECTORY

19 May 2004
65/04

The Australian public will have quicker and easier access to contact information for Australian Government organisations with the release of a new government directory website.

The Government Online Directory, www.directory.gov.au provides information about the organisational structure and key people in the Australian Government and is a successor to the current Government On-Line Directory website, www.gold.gov.au

New, more user-friendly features have been built into www.directory.gov.au including the ability to browse through organisational structures and to print information in a report format similar to that of the printed Guide to the Australian Government.

The website design has a new 'look and feel' which is to be the style for future releases of other whole-of-government websites managed by the Australian Government Information Management Office.

It also incorporates the new Australian Government brand to provide a consistent experience for visitors to these websites.

The release of the new website is consistent with the recommendations of the recent Management Advisory Committee report Connecting Government: Whole of Government Responses to Australia's Priority Challenges.

The new directory also provides an improved infrastructure for managing, sharing and integrating directory information within the Australian Government and it enhances the capacity of Australian Public Service employees to have information about government at their fingertips.

The development of this website is part of the Government's ongoing program of making information about government and services more accessible to the Australian public and is in keeping with Australia's role at the forefront of e-government.
